Our Approach
PORT’s work emerges from a belief that the public realm is the most important and consequential space in the contemporary city. It is the essential, multifaceted system upon which high-functioning, healthy cities rely.
PORT is a highly collaborative design practice that creates welcoming, generous, distinct public spaces through an ongoing process of asking, listening, observing, and immersing throughout the design and planning process.
We create meaningful and lasting connections with the people and places in which we work. We pay as close attention to existing physical conditions and a community’s aspirations—both conspicuous and hidden. We bring fresh eyes and a perspective shaped by our commitment to create authentic, bespoke spaces for communities that are transformative and timeless.
PORT is a leader in the planning and design of inclusive and sustainable urban public realm. We collaborate with communities and stakeholders to realize innovative public landscapes—both large and small. Our process is context-based, shaped by conversation, and backed by evidence. We’re driven by an unshakeable belief in the potential of empathetic and well-designed urban public space.
Since 2018, PORT has been recognized with more than 40 awards for design excellence from organizations including the ASLA, AIA, ULI, Architectural League of New York, and the Walton Family Foundation Design Excellence program. PORT was recently awarded the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize as part of the fourth cycle of Exhibit Columbus, Public by Design.
