Rebuild Philadelphia
The Cobbs Creek Nature Playground exemplifies PORT’s commitment to creating equitable, high-quality public spaces. Situated at the edge of Philadelphia’s municipal boundary, this transformative project revitalized a historically underinvested site into a vibrant, inclusive play environment that celebrates its unique urban-woodland character.
The playground’s design draws inspiration from the site’s existing mature tree canopy, which holds significant cultural and ecological value for the Cobbs Creek neighborhood. These trees, preserved and integrated into the design, provide natural shade and reinforce the community’s connection to the environment. The layout is conceptualized as a clearing nestled among the trees, with a looped path that organizes the space and offers a full circuit for play and exploration. Within this loop, distinct zones cater to children of all ages, while ample seating ensures caregivers are comfortably accommodated.

The project was guided by robust community engagement efforts. Over 300 local students and residents participated in surveys, focus groups, and workshops, helping shape key design decisions. Early in the process, the design team encountered graffiti on existing play equipment that read, “Safe play spaces matter.” This sentiment became the project’s guiding principle, ensuring safety and inclusivity for all users.
The completed playground not only provides a much-needed recreational asset for the Cobbs Creek neighborhood but also stands as a model for sustainable, community-centered design. It reflects a vision for public spaces that prioritize environmental stewardship, intergenerational play, and equitable access.
