The Frankford Avenue Connector transforms a previously underutilized corridor into a vibrant, cohesive link between Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood and the Delaware riverfront. This comprehensive project enhances safety, accessibility, and identity through a series of strategic interventions spanning the 1,600-linear-foot corridor.
PORT’s design integrates streetscape enhancements and urban furnishings with four distinct project components:
Each of these components is implemented in a separate phase of the project’s development, allowing for a flexible and strategic approach to transforming this key corridor. These interventions collectively reorient Frankford Avenue toward prioritizing pedestrians while supporting local businesses and fostering new public spaces for community gathering.

In order to create a safe, cohesive, and inviting passage for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, as well as to generate new spaces for public collection, PORT designed a series of discrete interventions at various locations along the 1600’ corridor.
The Frankford Avenue Connector addresses key challenges, including the I-95 corridor as a barrier to the waterfront, cluttered streetscapes, unclear connections to the Delaware River Trail, and a confusing 5-way intersection creating conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.
