Shaped around the public realm, this new 11.5-acre mixed-use development is a pedestrian-friendly oasis along Columbia's Lake Kittamaqundi.

Lakefront North

Columbia, MD

Howard Hughes Holdings

PORT designed the public  realm for a new 11.5-acre mixed-use urban development in Columbia, Maryland. This project follows the completion of the District-wide Public Realm Framework Plan in 2022, which established a pedestrian-focused vision for the  larger 96-acre Lakefront North district, incorporating 48 acres of buildings,  parking, and streets and an additional 48 acres of natural spaces in the form  of a 26-acre recreational lake and 22-acres of ravines that frame the neighborhood to the north and the south.

As the master public realm designer, PORT led the landscape design of a 75,000-sf woonerf (a.k.a. a  living or shared street), a 25,000-sf terraced public square, and a 20,000-sf community green. The design prioritizes pedestrian experience on the high street, incorporating a curbless design, catenary lighting, and wide sidewalk  zones. The street also allows for closure during events, creating a platform  for community connection and a celebratory atmosphere. Built-in planters direct vehicular traffic away from the pedestrian zone, while integrating native plantings and seating. Two public plazas, including a terraced square with a pedestrian promenade, connect the development to the surrounding Lake Kittamaqundi trail system.

The public realm design reflects two themes: urban and wild. The urban side presents a structured and formal expression, while the wild side embraced a layered and informal character, strengthening the connection to the wooded landscape. The programmed public spaces aims to enhance inclusivity and connectivity among residents, the community, and the environment. Pedestrian movement is encouraged by establishing key visual corridors with playful furnishings and public art strategically positioned to terminate important vistas, drawing people to amenity spaces along the lakefront.

Construction for the Phase 1 landscape implementation of the northern block of the study area is currently under permit review, marking the realization of the district-wide vision and the beginning of a transformative decade for the Lakefront District. Linking Urban and Wild

The project seamlessly integrates with the existing Lake Kittamaqundi trail system, creating a continuous pedestrian and cyclist network. This strategic connection enhances accessibility and promotes healthy, active lifestyles.

Library Square & Terraced

At the heart of the Lakefront District, a terraced plaza connects the new Central Library to the water and incorporates a variety of features and urban furnishings to offer a range of public occupation.

This project exemplifies a new model for urban development, demonstrating how dense, walkable neighborhoods can seamlessly integrate with natural environments. By prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist access, and creating inviting public spaces, this project challenges the traditional suburban paradigm and offers a vision for a more sustainable and livable future.
